Abstract
Iron deficiency (ID) is the predominant cause of anemia worldwide. The main causes of IDA are a) the increased iron demand, b) the insufficient intake and c) the acute or chronic blood loss. The conditions of increased iron demands, mainly pregnancy, infancy, blood donation, and athletics are discussed in detail as they affect a high percentage of the population and necessitate special therapeutic or preventive interventions. In addition an algorithm of the diagnostic approach of patients with IDA related to age and sex is analysed focusing on gastrointestinal tract evaluation.
