Abstract

Iron deficiency anemia is a serious universal public health issue due, mostly to increased frequency in infants, adolescents, preschool children and pre-menopausal women. After we have established the diagnosis, we first have to find the cause of it and then treat it appropriately. Iron is preferably given orally, except from the cases of malabsorption or severe GI tract discomfort, where parenteral administration of iron supplements is required. Giving iron supplements and iron enriched food in infants, preschool children and pregnant women we reduce the risk of iron deficiency anemia in these populations.
